Inzamam pounded the bowlers in every direction

Pakistan had earlier amassed 273 with Inzamam-ul-Haq starring with a dazzling 79 of 95 balls, supported by a 77 from Saeed Anwar.

After winning the toss, Pakistan began confidently, and the noisy crowd were entertained by a swift 25 runs from Shahid Afridi.

He was cut in his prime as Alan Mullally's full length ball was blasted skyward but was caught just short of the boundary by Mark Ealham.

Saeed Anwar's century partnership with Inzamam was brought to an end after being caught by Hollioake off Dominic Cork - Anwar's magnificent 77 came off 106 balls.

Wagging tail

Cork's second wicket proved the end for Inzamam's efforts, and Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan both fell as they pushed for runs in the final overs.

Azhar Mahmood ensured the Pakistan tail kept wagging - he added 38 off 24 balls and remained unbeaten alongside Wasim Akram (4).

Although Cork claimed two wickets it was Ealham who shined with the ball - he remained wicketless but conceded just 35 runs.

Gough is frustrated at going close for England

Waqar Younis ripped into the England batsmen, claiming the wickets of Marcus Trescothick (28) - caught by Younis Khan - and Alistair Brown (8), who edged to Rashid Latif.

Michael Vaughan (5) and Alec Stewart (10) both fell to Azhar Mahmood, aided by the brilliance of two majestic catches from Saeed Anwar and Shoaib Malik respectively.

Paul Collingwood's England one-day debut will be an education - as well as being smacked for 18 runs off his two overs he managed just two before being out leg before to Abdur Razzaq.

Saqlain Mushtaq claimed the scalps of Ben Hollioake (6) and Mark Ealham as Cork did his best to knock the ball out of the ground.

After a swashbuckling 18 off 21 he was undone by Shahid Afridi's first ball.

Although Alan Mullally's innings was extended with the farcical scenes at the end, he also struggled to trouble the scorers too much.

England will have to improve and improve quickly and will need more than a pitch invasion to prevent any further batting capitulations.
