Waqar was in sizzling form with the ball

England were decimated by a breathtaking spell of bowling from Waqar, who finished with seven for 36 runs - the second best bowling figures in one-day cricket.

England had struggled on 58-7 but Ben Hollioake salvaged some pride with a spirited 53, aided by a fantastic knock from Darren Gough.

They at least surpassed their worst one-day total of 86 achieved against Australia at Old Trafford.

Waqar bowled out Marcus Trescothick with the very first ball of the day and then claimed the wicket of Nick Knight with the score on 23.

Michael Vaughan (2) fell next in the 11th over, Owais Shah (3) soon followed and then Paul Collingwood edged Waqar to Younis Khan facing his first delivery.

Razzaq shines at the crease

Captain Alec Stewart briefly impressed for 18, and then Dominic Cork (4) edged to wicketkeeper Rashid Latif.

Hollioake fell to Shahid Afridi, and Andrew Caddick and Alan Mullally both fell cheaply, leaving Gough on an excellent unbeaten 40.

Two early wickets from Gough made him England's leading one-day wicket taker - Saeed Anwar (24) and Shahid Afridi (2) were both caught by Stewart - but Pakistan were rarely troubled in their run chase.

With just 10 runs from the target, Abdur Razzaq's efforts were ended by Cork - who also captured Yousuf Youhana's scalp - but sadly Waqar's phenomenal achievements will be pushed out of the headlines.

The result was academic as Pakistan and Australia have already secured their final spot at Lord's on Saturday.
