Although a veteran of more than 300 one-day internationals, Waugh's enthusiasm remains undimmed.

Once a canny medium pacer who enjoyed the challenge of bowling at the end of tight games, Waugh now focuses on the twin responsibilities of captaincy and batting.

As skipper, he led Australia to victory over Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup final in England and made his highest one-day score of 120 not out against South Africa earlier in the competition.

Bevan's Test career stalled in 1998 after 18 appearances produced a disappointing return of 785 runs and an average of 29.07.

Contrast that with a one-day average of over 57 which has resulted in Bevan being rated arguably the best in the world when wearing coloured clothing.

Avoids taking needless risks but his ability to pace an innings is unequalled and he keeps the scoreboard moving with excellent running between the wickets. Achieved his highest one-day score to date of 108 not out against England at The Oval on the 1997 tour.

Nathan Bracken

Left arm fast medium bowler; right hand batsman

Called into the squad during the triangular series against West Indies and Zimbabwe during the winter.

Although his figures are nothing to shout about so far, Bracken can trouble the best as he showed by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar twice during the one-dayers in India earlier this year.

The selectors underlined their belief in his ability by picking him for both the one-day and Test squads in England.

Damien Fleming

Team: Victoria

Right arm fast medium bowler; right hand batsman

Given the proliferation of one-day internationals around the globe, it is surprising that swing bowler Fleming is still well short of 100 appearances for Australia despite making his debut against South Africa seven years ago.

He was, however, an important member of their attack at the 1999 World Cup in England, taking 14 wickets during the tournament.

Regained his place over the winter following injury problems and appeared in four of the five one-day games on the recent tour of India. He will find conditions more to his liking in England.

Adam Gilchrist

Australia�s one-day success in recent years is in no small part due to their settled opening partnership of Gilchrist and Mark Waugh.

If one of them fails to make a big score, the chances are the other will and Gilchrist have proved himself capable of taking any attack apart since making his debut in October 1996.

A brilliant 154 off 129 balls against Sri Lanka in Melbourne two years ago was the high point so far and he contributed a vital 76 to Australia�s four-wicket win in the fifth and deciding one-dayer in India in April.

Jason Gillespie

Right arm fast bowler; right hand batsman

Few would argue that Gillespie has the potential to be a truly outstanding fast bowler, but his progress has been interrupted by a variety of injury problems.

His inclusion in the one-day squad is something of a surprise, given the need to keep him fit for the five Ashes Tests which follow.

Gillespie's last one-day appearance for Australia was at the ICC Knockout event in Kenya last October when he took two for 39 in a losing cause against India in the quarter-finals.

Ian Harvey

Right arm medium pace bowler; right hand batsman

Harvey's massive contribution to Gloucestershire's success in one-day cricket - five trophies in the last two seasons - cannot be overstated.

Although a more than capable batsman, it is his intelligent bowling with the new ball and at the end of an innings which have made him a thorn in the side of many English county sides.

Often operates as first change for Australia, and is therefore more concerned with keeping the runs down than taking wickets, but claimed four for 28 against Zimbabwe in Melbourne earlier this year.

Matthew Hayden

Australia may have lost the Test series and only scraped a 3-2 win in the one-dayers in India, but their recent tour was a personal triumph for Matthew Hayden.

The left-hander's prolific form in the Tests, including a double century, prompted the selectors to add him to the one-day squad and he did not let them down with scores of 99 at Bangalore and 111 at Visakhapatnam.

Used the sweep shot to combat the Indian spinners, but is likely to rely on a more orthodox approach in England, where he performed with distinction for Northamptonshire last summer.

Damien Martyn

In Test terms, Martyn is the 'nearly man' of Australian cricket - always in and around the squad but never able to establish a regular place in the final eleven.

It is a different story in one-day cricket, however, where his wide range of strokes and superb fielding have made him indispensable to skipper Steve Waugh in recent series.

Martyn has scored more than 1,500 one-day runs including a magnificent unbeaten 144 off 149 balls against Zimbabwe at Perth in February and three half centuries in seven games against England.

Glenn McGrath

Right arm fast medium bowler; right hand batsman

McGrath is most people's idea of the best fast bowler in the business at present - in any conditions, and in any type of cricket.

A total of 326 wickets in 70 Tests at an average of 21.70 speaks for itself, but McGrath is just as effective in the shorter form of the game.

His tight control of line and length means batsmen can take few liberties and a season on the county circuit with Worcestershire in 2000 may help him exploit the conditions even more than on previous tours.

Ricky Ponting

If any Australian batsman can be said to be made for one-day cricket, it is Ricky Ponting.

Fluent and imaginative with the bat and an aggressive runner between the wickets, he is also a brilliant fielder in any position.

He has seven one-day centuries behind him, and averages over 40, but has yet to make one against England.

Andrew Symonds

Born in Birmingham and once coveted by the England selectors, Symonds decided to pledged his international future to the country where he grew up.

A clean and immensely powerful hitter, he set a record for the most sixes in first-class match when he cleared the ropes 20 times for Gloucestershire in 1994.

Symonds has yet to fully live up to his early potential as the Australian selectors seem to regard him as a one-day specialist, whose off-spin bowling has so far proved equally as effective as his batting.

Shane Warne

Right arm leg-spin and googly bowler; right hand batsman

Warne's achievements in Test cricket are what earned him a place among Wisden�s five cricketers of the 20th century.

But it should not be forgotten that he also has more than 250 wickets under his belt in one-day internationals and was the most successful Australian bowler during the 1999 World Cup in England with 20.

He was on the receiving end during Australia�s recent tour to India and there are those who believe Warne's career may now be in decline. Taking on England is likely to provide all the inspiration he needs to answer the doubters.

Mark Waugh

Right hand batsman; right arm medium pace bowler

Australia�s record scorer in one-day cricket with more than 8,200 runs, Waugh is fifth on the all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Desmond Haynes and Aravinda de Silva.

Now in his mid 30s, he is still capable of destroying an attack and made his highest score of 173 off only 148 balls against West Indies in February.

He has 17 more one-day hundreds to his credit, including an innings of 113 against England at Edgbaston in 1993.
