Firework stops Trent Bridge cricket
Crowd at Trent Bridge
Fireworks were also let off in the crowd
Australian cricketers walked off the field during a one-day match against Pakistan after a firework landed near the boundary.

The match at Trent Bridge resumed after 18 minutes but Australia captain Steve Waugh warned he would not hesitate to end the game if it happened again.

Pitch invasions at Edgbaston and Headingley have marred the NatWest Series triangular competition, also involving England.

If you feel threatened or in danger, you let the umpires know and you go off

Waugh says he will not risk any of his players being hurt.

Play stopped, with Pakistan at 250 for six after 45 overs, when a firework landed near the boundary on the field.

While the players waited in their changing room, more fire-crackers exploded in the crowd.

Waugh had warned earlier in the day: "If it gets out of control we will be off the ground until they get it right.

"It is the same as anywhere else; if you feel threatened or in danger, you let the umpires know and you go off."

Extra security

A range of security measures were already in place for the game.

More than 350 stewards were on duty and plastic fencing barriers are in place to stop crowds invading the pitch.

Urdu and Punjabi speakers have been recruited for the public address system and were used to explain the Australian captain's warnings after the incident.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has backed calls for stiffer penalties for anyone invading the outfield.

On Sunday a steward suffered a broken nose and badly bruised ribs when crowds ran onto the field before the end of the England Pakistan match.

England captain Alec Stewart eventually conceded the game as Pakistan were only four runs short of their victory target when the invasion occurred, with 10.1 overs in hand.
