The 31-year-old Swede followed her opening 63 with a five-under par round to move her within sight of her fifth win of the season. She fired six birdies in the first nine holes to move seven shots clear of the field, but three bogeys on the backward nine gave her rivals renewed hope. "The back nine was very tough," said Sorenstam, who was 15-under after 27 holes of the event. "The wind seemed like it was sideways on every hole. And then I think the greens got much firmer and much faster. "Earlier in the week I was firing at the pin. Today I had to allow for some roll." Danielle Ammaccapane, one of Sorenstam's playing partners, is second on nine-under after carding a 70. Nervy finish Karrie Webb, Vicki Goetze-Ackerman, Grace Park - whose 64 was the best round of the day - and Mhairi McKay are all on eight-under. Sorenstam three-putted the 10th for a bogey and also dropped shots on the 12th and 17th to bring her back to the field. But the world number one birdied the final hole and is in prime position to win the inaugural event that is played over 54 holes. "This is a course where anybody can shoot low scores, so I have to prepare to play well," she added. "I'm not going out there to just protect the lead. I'm going to fire all cylinders and see how low I can go." |
