Disgraced former Cardiff City striker Leon Jeanne had his playing comeback delayed on Friday night by eagle-eyed officials from Barry Town.

The 21-year-old, who was released by the Bluebirds in May after refusing to provide a mandatory second drugs test, was named on Havant and Waterlooville's teamsheet for a pre-season friendly.

With the opposition being League of Wales champions Barry, it wasn't long before staff at Jenner Park queried whether Jeanne was eligible to play for the visitors from the Doctor Martens Premier Division.

The former Wales Under-21 star was already serving a suspended sentence for failing a drugs test at the end of last year, but is now banned from playing until he faces a Football Association of Wales disciplinary commission.

In addition, an application to the FAW for international clearance should have been applied for if a non-Welsh club such as Havant and Waterlooville wanted to play Jeanne.

Hawks co-managers Mick Jenkins and Liam Daish at least had the consolation of casting their eye over potential signings James Ford and Danny Smith, who were released by AFC Bournemouth at the end of last season.

Twenty-year-old midfielder Ford signed with the Cherries in April 2000 after progressing through the youth squad, while Smith is a year younger and an adaptable defender.

Barry's fans, meanwhile, had the chance to see attacking midfielder Nathan Cotterill in their colours for the first time.

Cotterill, 25, was recruited from rivals Cwmbran - who he scored 10 goals for last season - and has agreed a one-year deal at Jenner Park.

The Dragons won the game 2-1 with goals from Dave Toomey and Jon French after James Taylor had given the visitors the lead.

Barry were using the match as a warm-up for their Champions League qualifying tie against FC Skonto, with the first leg in Latvia on Wednesday 17 July, before the return leg in Wales a week later.

Barry have secured the services of former Manchester City and West Ham midfielder Ian Bishop during their European campaign.
