The 21-year-old was subject to a random drugs test at the club's training ground on Monday and refused to provide a mandatory second. Cardiff received the test results on Friday which showed that the first sample provided by Jeanne did not seem to be urine.
In light of this, and evidence which revealed the drug testing team had gone to great lengths to allow Jeanne to provide a second sample at his convenience, the club has decided to terminate his contract. "Everyone at the club feels very sorry and disappointed that this has transpired," Cardiff said in a statement. "A lot of effort and money was afforded to help this very talented young man to make something for himself. "It is indeed a human tragedy and our thoughts should be directed first and foremost to Leon himself." Earlier this week, the former Wales Under-21 striker had denied any wrong-doing. "The drugs test people let me go after the first sample," he said. "Then they rang me later and wanted me to go back and give a second sample.
"I had given them a sample and by the time I rang I was with my children in Newport. I told them I would give another sample, but I couldn't go back then." However, according to the club, Jeanne's family have since confirmed that his children were not with him at that time. Jeanne, who signed a new contract at Cardiff on the morning of the test, is currently serving a suspended sentence for failing a drug test at the end of last year. Under the conditions of that sentence from the Football Association of Wales, he underwent drink and drug rehabilitation courses at the Priory clinic. Following this latest episode, it is now up to the FAW to decided Jeanne's future in professional football. The Wales under-21 international struggled at first following his move from Arsenal in 2000. But he cemented his place in the first team last season under Lennie Lawrence, and his good form was rewarded with a call-up to the senior Wales side. | See also: 29 May 02 | Cardiff City 29 Nov 01 | Cardiff City 07 Feb 02 | Cardiff City 22 May 02 | Cardiff City Top Cardiff City stories now: Links to more Cardiff City stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
