Guernsey swimmers aim for Commonwealth finals

Ian Powell
Powell said he was also setting his sights on the Olympics in 2012

Personal bests and finals are the targets for Guernsey's swimmers for the Commonwealth Games in October, says one of those selected.

Ian Powell, Tom Hollingsworth, Alexander Beaton, Ben Lowndes, Jeremy Osborne and Ian Hubert will represent the island in Delhi.

Powell, who races in the butterfly, said: "We've got chances of making semi-finals, possibly finals.

"Island records may be going as I know the guys are training hard."

Powell, one of Guernsey's hopefuls for London 2012, has moved from Florida, after his graduation there, to be based at an intensive training centre in Stockport.

He said: "There's five of them in Britain and they're funded by British Swimming. It's a great place to prepare. The goal is to send people to the Olympics."
