| Rising from the Ashes ![]() Australia's Justin Langer is on top of the world after resurrecting his Test career with a superb 102 not out at The Oval - as he reveals in his latest Ashes diary for BBC Sport Online. Thursday, August 23, 2001 Today has been like a dream. Fifteen days ago I wrote a postcard describing that I felt like my career was at rock bottom. Dropped from the Test team, struggling to score runs against the county attacks and basically feeling down and out, with the world against me. When I was told of my selection for this Test match I vowed to myself that whatever happened I was going to enjoy the next five days and have a lot of fun in the baggy green cap. This attitude helped me go into the day brimming with enthusiasm and energy.
Now as I type this postcard (with an ice-pack strapped to my throbbing left ear), I can admit to feeling on top of the world. It is often said you have to reach rock bottom before you can start climbing up the mountain for the sweet reward of the summit. Having experienced both emotions over the last two weeks, I can recommend the latter to anybody. You never know what is around the corner in this life and by remembering this, it is easier to live a happier life regardless of the circumstances. One thing's for sure is that the rewards taste so much sweeter when you have tasted the bitter feeling of disappointment. Early night This postcard is a short one because my bed is calling. Luckily, a CT scan cleared me of any internal damage to my head, and I am happy to report that I will have my hand up to go in at the fall of the next wicket.
A sore left ear aside, I am feeling pumped right now - basically it is as simple as that. We have had a great day today - batting with Matty Hayden was even more fun than I could have imagined. I think this opening the batting gig could be the change in career that I have needed. I don't think it will be the last time I open the batting in my life... From London, |
