![]() | Sunday, 19 August, 2001, 22:41 GMT 23:41 UK Australia robbed by rain ![]() Australia's Justin Langer continues his Ashes diary for BBC Sport Online on the fourth day of the fourth Test at Headingley. Sunday, 19 August, Heavy rain and bad light robbed us of the opportunity to obliterate England's chances of taking a Test victory at Headingley. As it now stands, the hosts may feel like they have a chance to win this fourth Test and take something from the summer. While the rain continued to fall, Channel Four played highlights of England's Test victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka earlier this year.
The problem they face, as they have for the last two months, is four world class bowlers who are hungry for a whitewashed summer. With the Headingley pitch into her fifth day, we are confident that the creation of at least ten chances is achievable. Heavy skies today increased the movement in the air, and with the pitch starting to show signs of uneven bounce, England will have to be on top of their games. If they are serious about pulling off an unlikely win, it would not surprise any of us to see Alec Stewart or Afzaal promoted in the batting order. England must show positive intent from early on, if they are to gain enough momentum to beat us.
Banking on a full fine day of weather is never a sure thing in this country, but if the Gods are willing to shine a smile on us through clear skies, then tomorrow could be another fantastic day of Test cricket. The entertainment over the last four days has been outstanding and it would be sad if an exciting result didn't add the final polish to a great Test match. Ricky Ponting proved in both innings that runs could come quickly through positive batting. England has it all to play for and if they studied Ricky's approach then they will fancy themselves as a silly chance tomorrow. Time will tell JL |
