Junior's special innings

Australian batsman Justin Langer continues his Ashes tour diary for BBC Sport Online.

Day Two, Second Test at Lord's
Elegant, stylish and unflappable are just a few of the adjectives used regularly to describe the slightly younger of the two twins.

If I added the words tough, determined and proud, you might think I am getting Mark mixed up with Stephen.

As cool and confident as Mark looks on the field, there is no doubt that he has inner steel like his brother.

While it manifests itself in a different appearance, 'Junior's' character is a lot stronger than he is often given credit for.

Mark Waugh
Junior often makes batting look easy
An example of his drive and determination shined through during his first Test century at Lord's.

Caught one run short of the milestone in 1993, it was easy to observe in his preparation that he was particularly fired up for his last Test at the home of cricket.

Not one for jumping around or making predictions like Prince Nazeem, he went about his preparations in his normal laid back manner, but there was a different look in his eyes from the moment he started padding up.

You could tell that he wanted to make his last Test match at Lord's, a special occasion.

All batsmen want to see their names up on the honour board in the visitors changing room and Mark wrote himself into the history books and onto the distinguished board with a century that people will remember for a long time.

There are few batsmen who can delight a crowd like M.E Waugh.

Mark and Steve Waugh
Mark's momentous occasion was shared with Steve
He makes the game look so easy, that it is almost sickening for the mere mortals.

Crashing balls through mid-wicket with the ease of turning on a light switch, or late cutting fast bowlers as if he was playing a spinner on the village green, 'Junior' displayed all the traits of his greatness on the hallowed turf.

With Stephen receiving so many plaudits for his feats in Test cricket over the last five years, it is with delight that I can write such kind words about his younger brother.

When Junior scored his hundred, the handshake between he and his brother sent a shiver up the back of my neck.

There is no doubt that 'Tugga' would have been absolutely pumped to see his brother scoring a Lord's century with him batting at the other end.

Obviously the two have been together for centuries before, but this one was a special one, as it will more than likely be their last time playing Test cricket at Lord's together, and just the very fact that it was Lord's.

Glenn McGrath
McGrath was in a different class
Junior's marvellous innings and Glenn McGrath's devastating bowling earlier in the day have us in a strong position at the end of day two.

Like Mark Waugh, 'The Pidgeon' McGrath is simply a superstar.

It was just another reminder of his incredible ability with a cricket ball in his hand.

One more productive batting partnership in the morning and we will be in a position to push England right into a corner.

A corner that will hopefully be the place where we can deliver a final knockout blow.
