Trescothick carried the fight to Australia

England started the fourth day 234 runs behind, and had begun in spirited fashion with Mark Butcher and Marcus Trescothick treating the bowlers with rare disdain.

Both Warne and Glenn McGrath suffered the indignity of seeing their deliveries regularly pounded for boundaries, with the occasional six thrown in for good measure.

But Australia were not likely to take this treatment lightly and Butcher was soon to fall, edging a vicious bouncer from Brett Lee after scoring a fine 41.

But as Trescothick took the fight to Australia, and with his skipper nursing his wounds in the pavilion, his batting partners buckled under the intense pressure from the increasingly dangerous pacemen.

Ian Ward (3) was Lee's second victim, playing on to his stumps, and his downfall, sadly predictably, initiated the onset of another England collapse - they lost their last seven wickets for 22 runs.

Gillespie demoralised the England batsmen

Alec Stewart had made just five before edging Gillepsie to Warne in the slips, with Craig White (0) and Usman Afzaal (2) soon to follow, both undone by an inspired Gillespie.

Darren Gough was trapped leg before on his very first ball, and the misery was completed as Ashley Giles was snapped up by Mark Waugh, to give Warne his third scalp.

Caddick, the hero from England's first innings' last-wicket stand, was unable to repeat his efforts and finished unbeaten on six.

With the Australians in this mood, England may need to bring in the rain-dancers if they are to avoid a similar fate at Lord's in two weeks.
