Windies must show pride - Bucknor

West Indian umpiring legend Steve Bucknor believes his compatriots could learn a lot about pride from lesser cricketers like Guernsey.

Bucknor was officiating in Guernsey's four-wicket win over Gibraltar on the same day that the Windies' 2-0 series defeat to England was confirmed.

He said: "They enjoy earning but pride seems to have gone out the window.

"I don't think players are doing their utmost to do the West Indian people proud," Bucknor told BBC Guernsey.

"The players are making huge sums of money but I don't think they are working hard enough for that money.

"Because they are making money and the competition is not tight enough players are still selected when they are not performing well."

Bucknor is on duty in Guernsey at the ICC World Cricket League Division Seven tournament being held on the island. And he admits to having been impressed with the spirit he has seen at this lowest level of international cricket.

"You saw people diving around the place as if their life depended on it," added Bucknor. "This is what you would love to see the West Indians do.

"These guys were trying their utmost and they are amateurs."
