 Pakistan celebrate a wicket |
Asif Iqbal held his nerve to play a vital part in Pakistan's 25-run victory over the West Indies in the Under-19 World Cup final in Dhaka. Iqbal's half-century in a stand of 97 with Salman Qadir rescued Pakistan from 81-4 as they posted 230-9.
"I went out to play my natural game and do my best for my team," he said, after winning the man-of-the match award.
"With four wickets down I wasn't trying to go for big shots and just took the singles early on."
Coach Aqib Javed paid tribute to his team.
"This is a memorable moment as we are both under-15 and under-19 world champions now.
"The final against West Indies was tough but I am happy because that's how a World Cup final should really be," he said.
"It was an interesting final but I would still rate the win over India most satisfying.
"Wherever we play, whenever we play, if it's against India it's crucial and a win is really really thrilling - nothing can match it."
West Indies skipper Dinesh Ramdin offered no excuses after his side slumped to defeat.
They had their chances to take a grip on the match, but paid the price for some dreadful running between the wickets with four batsmen being run out.
"We made a few mistakes and they capitalised a lot," admitted Ramdin.
"But Pakistan played good cricket and took wickets at crucial times."
