New Zealand's batsmen celebrate a narrow win in Dhaka

England beat Nepal by eight wickets in their opening fixture of the under-19 World Cup but their bowlers struggled to make an impression.

Nepal hit 191-8 with England's new-ball pair Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett both proving expensive.

But slow bowler Samit Patel impressed, conceding just 15 runs from 10 overs.

England reached their target with 17 overs to spare with Essex's Ravi Bopara hitting 59 and Worcestershire's Steven Davies making 78 not out.

Nepal could nevertheless be contented with their efforts, topped by Sarad Vesawakar's 82.

Elsewhere, New Zealand battled to a two-wicket win over hosts Bangladesh, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka also enjoyed opening victories.

The Kiwis reached their target of 203 with just four balls and two wickets remaining.

All-rounder Sam McKay (40 not out) kept his cool to hit the winning runs off the second in front of a crowd of more than 15,000.

His sixth-wicket partnership with Anton Devcich (36) turned the match decisively in New Zealand's favour after they had stuttered to 118-6.

Earlier, Craig Smith took 4-43 for the Kiwis while Bangladesh opener Nafis Iqbal hit 67.

Pakistan trounced Papua New Guinea by eight wickets after bowling them out for 60 in 17.5 overs and reaching the target in the 15th over.

Sri Lanka's win was by two wickets over Zimbabwe in the northern city of Bogra. Sri Lanka made 162-8 in reply to Zimbabwe's 161 all out.
