Australia U19 trounce Scots
Roelof van der Merwe
Van der Merwe hit 54 in South Africa's upset of India
Australia, knocked out of Under-19 World Cup contention last week, took their frustrations out on Scotland, bowling them out for just 22 on Sunday.

In the consolation Plate Competition, the Aussies took 3.5 overs to overhaul the lowest total in tournament history.

South Africa replaced India as the new favourites after clinching a three-run upset under floodlights in Dhaka.

And Sri Lanka made a poor start to the Super League stage when they fell 19 runs short of the West Indies.

Before Scotland's 10-wicket capitulation to Australia, the previous low in the tournament was 41, made by Canada against South Africa two years ago.

This match was over a minute before 11am local time after six of the Scotland batsmen were out for ducks.

Australia's opening bowlers Gary Putland and Cameron Huckett took four wickets each.

Coach Willie Morton was dismayed after Scotland's fourth consecutive heavy defeat.

"Australia are a strong team but we can't accept results as poor as that. I am very disappointed with the way we played today," he said.

India's confidence was dealt a blow by South Africa in a rollercoaster day/night match.

Roelof van der Merwe top-scored with 54 as the Republic reached 226-5 on a slow pitch.

Shikhar Dhawan opened up with 66 in reply but there was then a mid-innings collapse to the spinners.

Last wicket pair Shikhar Dhawan (43) and Rudrapa Singh (10 not out) added 35 in nine overs but it was just not enough.

"I was a bit concerned when Indias batsmen got off to such a good start but our bowlers fought back well and I think we deserved the victory," said South Africa coach Russell Domingo.

"Our players have more to show but after todays result I feel that we are capable of beating anybody."

India coach Robin Singh described the performance as "very disappointing".

He added: "I dont think we bowled particularly well, we fielded poorly and batted appallingly."

West Indies pace bowler Lionel Baker claimed the man of the match award after he took 6-39 to bowl Sri Lanka out for 181.

The Caribbean batsmen could breath a sigh of relief after they had compiled a modest 200-7, captain Denesh Ramdin top-scoring with 51.

"It's a great feeling to win today and it is good to start the Super League in good form," said Baker.

But Sri Lanka coach DS de Silva was critical of his side's batting display.

"If we are going to succeed in this tournament, the top order batsmen must make runs together," he said.

Nepal defeated Papua New Guinea by seven wickets in Sunday's other Plate Competition match.
