Ireland avoided bottom place in their group at the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh with a 70-run victory over Papua New Guinea.

Waringstown's Gary Kidd took 3-36 as Papua New Guinea were bowled out for 142 after the Irish had totalled 212.

Andrew Riddles top scored with 37 for Ireland and Gary Wilson made 36.

They will now play in the Plate Championship for teams finishing third and fourth in the four groups, where they will be joined by Scotland.

The Scots suffered their third defeat when they went down by 240 runs to New Zealand.

Bradley-John Watling and Brad Wilson shared a second wicket stand of 273 as the Kiwis piled up a score of 389-2.

Watling was eventually out for 154, but Wilson ended the innings unbeaten on 144.

Scotland were never in the hunt despite 60 by Kasim Farid and were all out for 149 in only 33 overs.

"We made too many basic errors," said manager Alistair Scott.

New Zealand's hopes of a place in the Super League now depend on the outcome of Friday's India v Bangladesh match.

Zimbabwe followed up their shock win over holders Australia with another convincing performance as they defeated Canada by eight wickets.

Prosper Utseya took 4-41 as Canada mustered only 180-9 from their 50 overs in front of a sell-out 15,000 crowd at the Bogra Stadium.

Zimbabwe cruised to their target with 17 overs to spare. with James Cameron picking up thre Man of the Match award for his 84 not out.

Nepal will reach the Super League if England beat South Africa on Friday following their five-wicket victory over Uganda.

Lakpa Lama picked up 4-40 as Uganda tailed off after a bright start which saw them reach 91-1 and were dismissed for 194 in the final over of their innings.

Nepalese captain Shakhti Gauchan carried his bat for 80 not out to see his side home with 11 balls in hand.
