Pakistan's win guaranteed England a semi-final spot
Alastair Cook hit his second century of the Under-19 World Cup to lead England into the semi-finals with a six-wicket victory over Zimbabwe.

Pakistan ensured they would be the second side through with an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand.

India play Sri Lanka and South Africa take on West Indies on Thursday with the winners going into the semi-finals.

In an repeat of two days previously, Cook hit 108 not out from 131 balls as England reached a target of 219.

Opener Brendon Taylor top-scored with 45 but Zimbabwe's 218-9 was not enough to prevent them from elimination.

Tim Bresnan and David Stiff both picked up three wickets for England.

Luke Wright scored 79 alongside his captain but it was Cook who saw England home.

"It is great to score two tons on the bounce but Samit (Patel) also scored a century against New Zealand and today Wrighty took a lot of the pressure off me with his 79 runs," Cook said.

"We came here aiming to get two points today and we're obviously happy to have done that but we didn't play as well as we know we can."

Even though Zimbabwe are out of the tournament, captain Tinotenda Mawoyo was full of praise for his team.

"We have shown we are not just here to make up the numbers and we should be proud of the way we have performed," he said.

New Zealand lost their last six wickets for 30 runs to crash to 181 all out against Pakistan.

And it took just 34 overs for Pakistan to complete victory.

Captain Khalid Latif top-scored with 90 from 86 deliveries, and he was ably supported by Adnan Zaheer, who hit an unbeaten 72.

"I was disappointed not to get to 100 but the most important thing was to help the team win," said Latif.

New Zealand coach Dayle Hadlee said: "Pakistan will certainly be one of the sides in contention at the end of the tournament."

Ireland progressed to the semi-finals of the consolation Plate Championship after a 155-run win over Canada.

But they must now beat Bangladesh on Friday to avoid favourites Australia in the next stage.

William Porterfield and Eion Morgan both reached 40 while Kevin O'Brien top-scored with 51 as the Irish totalled 265-9.

And six bowlers picked up wickets as Canada were bowled out for 110 in 34.3 overs.

"We have no specific plan for the Bangladesh match but if we play this well I think we have a chance of winning," said Ireland coach Adrian Birrell.

Bangladesh confirmed their place in the Plate semi-finals with a four-wicket win over Uganda.

Pace bowler Nazmul Hossain claimed the first five wickets and spinner Enamul Haque Jr the last four to bowl Uganda out for 78.

Uganda's Emmanuel Isaneez claimed 6-37 - the second best in the tournament - but it wasn't enough to prevent the hosts reaching the target in 19.5 overs.

"Our bowlers are doing well but I'm worried about our batsmen," Bangladesh coach Richard McInnes admitted.

"They are playing badly and I'm not happy but if they can rediscover their form from earlier in the tournament I am confident we can reach the Plate Championship final."
