Ferrero arrives in Paris as the defending champion. The Spaniard finally made the transition from rising star to Grand Slam winner last year, sweeping through the field at Roland Garros.
He followed that by stunning Andre Agassi in the US Open semi-finals before falling to Andy Roddick, but that run gave him the world number one ranking for the first time.
The year ended in disappointment, however, as he lost the top spot to Roddick and then was beaten in both his singles matches in Spain's Davis Cup final defeat to Australia.
Ferrero, arguably the finest clay-court player of his generation, will justifiably be one of the favourites for the French Open title this year.
However, the 23-year-old has been struggling to recover his fitness after a bout of chicken pox and he missed the Masters events in Rome and Hamburg after losing to veteran compatriot Alex Corretja in the first round in Monte Carlo.
