Ricardo Zonta's Formula One career seems to be coming to an end having never really got off the ground. The Brazilian has been highly regarded as a test driver at both Jordan - before his first big break with BAR in 1999 - and later at Toyota.
But he has never quite managed to translate that form into being a truly convincing contender as a race driver.
He has one last chance to impress this year in Brazil before likely being consigned to history.
Zonta struggled at BAR, where he had his confidence knocked first by team-mate Jacques Villeneuve's psychological games, and then by a series of bad accidents, most caused by car failures.
BAR gave him two years, but the cycle of personal trauma and huge accidents continued, and he was dropped at the end of 2000.
He spent a year as test driver for Jordan in 2001, then stepped back to win the Iberian Nissan World Series single-seater championship in 2002, before becoming Toyota's test driver in 2003.
Zonta has impressed the team with his pace and technical knowledge, but he has been underwhelming since they drafted him in after sacking Cristiano da Matta following the German Grand Prix.
