The pressure is on for Toyota to begin to make a real mark in Formula One.

So far, possibly the biggest budget in the sport has not been spent effectively and the board in Japan will soon want to see evidence of progress.

Toyota have recruited the highly regarded designer Mike Gascoyne from Renault, and his first new design is eagerly anticipated in 2005.

But a major development of the 2004 car introduced mid-season failed to have any significant impact on results.

Next season is of crucial importance to both Toyota and Gascoyne, whose multi-million pound salary is expected to produce results quickly.

After three seasons languishing in the low midfield, the team's paymasters will be expecting the team to show the first real signs that their ambition of being title contenders in the near future has a chance of being realised.

That will mean Toyota starting to qualify regularly in the top six, and worrying teams like BAR-Honda, Renault, Williams-BMW and even McLaren.

Without that progress, Toyota's bosses will start to ask some very serious questions about the value of their F1 involvement - because, for them, only winning will do.
