Appleby reigns in Vegas

Appleby leads the marathon event
Stuart Appleby held his nerve in a play-off to win the marathon Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday.

The Australian sank a 12-foot birdie on the first extra hole to defeat American Scott McCarron in the five-day event.

It was Appleby's fourth victory on the PGA tour and his first since the 1999 Houston Open.

But he was forced to settle for a play-off when he suffered a bogey at the 17th, meaning that he and McCarron completed their regulation 90 holes at 31-under-par 328.

"Winning is obviously what we are trying to do out here," Appleby said afterwards.

"It's been a bit of a drought for me, four years, four months.

"Winning is great, there are a lot of things that come with it. Ultimately, holing the putt on the last, makes a lot of other great things happen."

Appleby is the event's first play-off winner since Tiger Woods won his first PGA title in 1996 by overcoming Davis Love.
