How to survive penalty shoot-outs
Points to remember
1. Keep your mind in the present
2. Focus on a positive outcome
3. Be specific about the outcome
4. Remember to breathe
5. Remember that you're in control

These are just suggestions, and should only be used if they feel right for the individual player.

And it is obviously very important to put in plenty of penalty practice on the training ground.

But in my experience, players who also work on their mental strength usually feel in control, and therefore perform better.

Christian Lattanzio is a Uefa-qualified football coach.
