Symonds had never really excelled for his country going into the World Cup but the selectors kept faith in his talent and he came good immediately against Pakistan.
Later, he would admit that the Shane Warne drug ban had made him angry and a match that the Aussies were in danger of losing was transformed by a brilliant Symonds innings of 143 not out.
He finished the tournament with 326 runs and was dismissed just twice.
Symonds has not really looked back since the World Cup. He had a superb series with the bat in the West Indies and performed well with the ball in India.
He is also one of the finest fielders the world has seen.
