Regarded as Test material ever since he burst onto the domestic scene for Victoria as a 19-year-old, Williams had to wait nine years for his first opportunity.
He finally wore the Baggy Green cap against Zimbabwe at the SCG, taking two wickets in each innings on a pitch which was not as conducive to fast bowling as his home track in Perth.
But he showed in the recent triangular one-day series in India that he can still pose a serious threat on lifeless strips by taking 4-22 and 5-53 in games against New Zealand.
Although he can be destructive with the new ball, Williams has looked less threatening in later spells and the selectors will be looking for an improvement in this area.
Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee are established as Australia's first-choice pace attack, bu they have all encountered injury problems this year and Williams could well figure.
