Katich was fortunate to be given his second chance at Test level against Zimbabwe in October when Darren Lehmann was ruled out by injury.
With many people expecting Martin Love to be called up, it was the extra bowling option provided by Katich which earned him the nod.
It proved an inspired decision as he contributed 52 to an Australian total of 403 and then ran through the Zimbabwe batting line-up for figures of 6-65, out-bowling senior spinner Brad Hogg, who managed only a single success.
Despite that, Katich is aware it is his batting which holds the key to his hopes of further chances at Test level, and a first-class average of 50 shows he has the necessary ability.
Made 1,143 runs, including four centuries, for Hampshire during the 2003 English season and is looking to continue that form on home soil to keep his name in the minds of the selectors.
