Arguably the most stylish batsman in the Australian team since Mark Waugh quit international cricket, Martyn has proved himself equally adept in both Test and one-day cricket.

Made his debut as a 21-year-old, but paid the price for a rash shot in the Sydney Test against South Africa in January 1994 and did not play Test cricket again until March 2000.

Given a second chance, he was determined to make the most of it and did so with two hundreds during the 2001 Ashes series in England and three against South Africa in the home and away double-header which followed.

Made a superb 88 not out off 84 balls and shared an unbroken stand of 234 with skipper Ricky Ponting, despite batting with a broken finger, as Australia beat India to retain the World Cup in March.

The injury kept him out of international cricket for six months but Martyn made up for lost time during the recent triangular one-day series in India with an innings of 100 against the hosts in Bombay.
