Aches and pains but all for a good cause.

On Friday night, while most of the world was doing normal, boring Friday night things I was at Clickimin with over 500 other people taking part in an all night Relay for Life in aid of Cancer Research.
We were all in teams and each team had to have a team member on the track at all times from 8pm until 8 am Saturday. Some people walked, some ran, some were in fancy dress, there were firemen in full breathing apparatus and by the end of the night some of us were a bit staggery, tired and very stiff but everyone felt much better when we heard that the event had already raised £33,000 with more still to come in!
Congratulations to Belle Spence (whose idea it was) and Elizabeth Johnson who both worked so hard to make the whole thing happen.
I have to say that the people of Unst are some of the most generous folk I have ever known, both financially and with their time. Every fund raising event is well supported.Last week there was a curry night in aid of the CATS appeal which raised over £1300 and a Big Breakfast event at the school raised £122. On Friday night it seemed as if very second person I saw was from Unst. And all this at a time when the future of Unst's economy is very unclear after the closure of RAF Saxa Vord. WELL DONE UNST! And well done everyone who took part.

Unst is not only a beautiful island, but sounds like a wonderful community. Wish I could have been there for the curry bash. Did you serve it with imported nan bread or rice? Hope it was not too cold.

Unst Curries are very good. Even the veggie one for the Unst Vegetarian. Radio Shetland reported on the Race for Life & strangely enough I got a text from Clickiminn at 2:10. Who would do a thing like that?

Herman from Orkney

I heard this morning the walk raised 40,000 pounds. That is really wonderful. Clickimin track: I hope the wind was not blowing too hard. I notice you had bagpipers: any fiddling? Very nice report on Radio Shetland - heard all the way in NM!! How long does it take to go from Baltasound to Lerwick, and are the ferries taking the cars to Yell and mainland frequent or "on demand"?

mjc from NM,USA

It takes about 2 hours to get to Lerwick from Unst. No the ferries are not on demand but run pretty frequently.

Its a bit like King Canute in reverse - you can stand at the terminal and demand a ferry - and eventually it works!

Oh yeah? I have been doing the same trick for years. As I approach a traffic light, I slow down to a crawl and will it to change to green: you won't believe how often it works!!

Would Canute have worked on Tuesday?

Herman from Orkney

Canute was on strike Tuesday, worried about what would happen when he got as old as Lear. Has the Hound of Unst arrived yet? Hope you all have a wonderful Easter/Spring holidays.
