Are there 2 places called How on Sanday?

Barebares from Shapinsay

.... and very soon they will be featured at the nearest hamburger joint near you!

mjc from NM,USA

There are (or should be?) several places in the northern (and other) isles called How. The How is a short form of "How on earth!?" Yours truly.

mjc from NM,USA

The How in the photograph is How Farm just outside of Kettletoft. There is at least one other, which is at the north end but I believe this one is Howe, at least for postal purposes. (I have a map which does not have the 'e' on the name.)

How/howe. not a non pc greeting to native americans but another of the wonderful reminders of our norse past. The modern norwegian haug means a heap, pile or mound and most howes are just that. Often burial mounds and of various dates. Maeshowe is about the same age or a bit before the pyramids but my favourite is the one in South Ronaldsay which is reputedly the burial mound of Thorfinn Skullsplitter.

Hyper-Borean from Troldhaugen

How about that indeed, Hyper-B.? I bow before your superior knowledge. But what about Geoffrey Howe? (He was somewhere on top of the heap before Thatcher broke his cricket bat.) What do you think might be the origins of his family name? Rather than being a Skullsplitter, ole Margaret did him in.

mjc from NM,USA

Yo, mjc. G Howe he of whom it was said, "Being criticised by Geoffrey is like being savaged by a dead sheep." He did, however, get his revenge playing a significant part in her downfall. As for his name I dinnae ken.

Hyper-Borean from An empty fank

these are great pics! I`m sure I recognise that coo! Mind you, wish I`d had a camera when a farmer ( no longer living on Sanday noo) who kept ostriches had tae chase them doon that very road one day as they got oot and made a break for it!

Hermit from Sanday

Whaddya mean, you can recognize that coo? Hermit, you must be joking (are you not?).
