Weather looks awful fine in bonnie Orkney.
Herman from Outwith Orkney
VERY nice. Wish I could have attended the fair. Supreme Champion looks the part. Cattle champion looks wonderful as well. So does the (Suffolk?) sheep. Oh well, guess that's why they are champions, eh (or, as some would say, "duh"?)?

Gorgeous looking animals and the weather, and spirits, seems to be even better. Thanks for the photographs.

Supreme Champion: I assume the person holding the ribbon is the judge? What kind of a "hoss" is it?
mjc from NM,USA
Hello mjc, Yes the young lady not mounted is the judge for the equine section. As for the horse I am afraid that I have no idea what kind he is, but if I find out I will reply again later. All I can tell you is that he is a very nice and easy going horse called Charlie.

We're extremely proud to see our daughter on Charlie as Supreme champion this year again. A biiiiiig success for Jackie and Maresa! And a biiiiig hug for Charlie! We love Sanday, its friendly people and the gorgeous landscape so much!!!!! Paul and Barbara from Bavaria

Just stopped by to wave a cheery greeting from the new Sanday blog, to the more established Sanday blog! We had hoped to be ensconced on the island by the time the show came around - sadly, we were still embroiled with recalcitrant house purchasers. We look forward to next year's show, though, and it is good to see your photographs of the day that we missed. We look forward to getting to know Sanday Images better!

I was on holiday when Charlie won the supereme champion, ridden and superbly turned out by Maressa my annual and very welcome German visitor. It was both a surprise and a delight to receive each subsequent text as we progressed southwards appraising us of his mounting winnings. Charlie is a gypsy cob, and I'm afraid he doesn't have a posh name. Rumour has it (for I have no idea about his real origins, or age - other than the fact that a severe shortage of teeth suggests he's elderly) that he once drew a bowtop caravan - a true gypsy horse. When I bought him he was an entire stallion, but was suffering with cancers on his body, legs and on a rater delicate organ which I shall not name on a BBC blog. In the intervening years he has put up a brave fight and comes through regular operations and unpleasant interventions to regain superb condition. He is much loved by us (despite having a slightly pungent aroma occasionally) and I have told him that he has a home for life now. I do believe that he understands me. He shows himself beautifully without a firm contact and his stallion neck still gives him an elegant and proud appearance - not seen at its best in the blog photo. He is an utterly safe riding and driving horse and can often be seen on weekend mornings pulling various members of my family along the beach and down to the village in a creaky old governess cart. Outside the shop he will stand and wait... for ever if necessary - even on Sanday there are no tying points outside shops any more. He enjoys a swim in the sea and can beat all-comers in a gallop up the stubble-field. The following weekend Charlie, still glowing from his Sanday show success, made an appearance at the County show. Unfortunately he just wasn't the judge's type - being a hairy old man of somewhat rough-and-ready parentage. Ever the optimist, he was not downhearted but reserved his energy for his annual social at the "riding of the marches". He has slept for most of this week. Many thanks from charlie to his many admirers. I hope this answers all the outstanding questions. He's a remarkable old man and deserves his good fortune.
Jackie from Sanday
Amazing story, and a wonderful one. Both horse and owner(s) deserve our unstinted admiration. Altogether a beautiful animal.
