Ever since PC Dennis Monk had a kiss from Ivy at an army recruitment drive he has held a candle for her.

After being badly disfigured by shrapnel, Dennis returns from the front wearing a painted copper mask to cover his injuries. He tries returning to his old job but feels too self-conscious and seeks out a role at the Pleasure Gardens Theatre – the darkness back stage appeals plus he is still sweet on Ivy.
