Coming from farming stock, Staff Sergeant Morrow is convalescing at the Bevan Hospital after suffering from trench fever. Under normal circumstances he would, as an NCO, be treated separately to an officer such as Victor; but with medical services overstretched by the war, these are not normal circumstances.
When Silas begins to display symptoms which cannot be physically explained, Dr Pilchard suspects the contagion of “war hysteria”. Adeline however is much more capable of understanding Silas’s mysterious illness, having herself suffered from the stigma of an unspoken, medicalised malady.
