How Adrian Lester photographs the world's stage

Actor Adrian Lester is probably best known for his portrayal of master con artist Mickey Bricks in the BBC's Hustle. He developed a love of photography through his work as a director. Here, he tells Get Creative how his new skill has given him a 'great sense of freedom'.

"My daughter offering bread to a Robin in the park. Shutter went off just as the Robin went for the crust."

He made his name on the London stage and won the prestigious Olivier Award in 1996 for his appearance in Company.

Any kind of self expression strengthens your self confidence

His extensive classical work led him to play Othello in 2013 alongside Rory Kinnear as Iago at the National Theatre. Both actors won the Best Actor award in the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for their roles; the award is traditionally given to only one actor, but the judges were unable to choose between the pair.

In 2013 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year Honours for services to drama.

But when he's not acting or directing, he has discovered a love for photography. We asked Adrian what being creative means to him:

How do you get creative outside of work?

I started directing for the camera a few years ago which led me to exploring photography.

How does it make you feel?

I'm still learning but it gives me great freedom and a brilliant sense of control over the work I finally produce.

Why would you encourage other people to get creative?

It's very rewarding. Any kind of self expression strengthens your self confidence. I would encourage anyone to do it.

"London at night. I experimented with moving the camera while the shutter was still open."
"The actress Kehinde Fadipe in a still from my short film Of Mary."
"A shot looking over South Birmingham at dusk."
