Wetin dey happen to Rivers govnor Fubara impeachment process?
Di impeachment move against govnor Siminalayi Fubara and im deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, don suffer some setback as four lawmakers withdraw dia support to di process.
Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II say dem for favour a peaceful resolution of di political crisis instead of going ahead with di impeachment.
For one media briefing dem do, Nwakoh wey be di Deputy Minority leader for di house say although dem acknowledge di alleged constitutional breaches wey di Assembly accuse Govnor Fubara, wey make dem wan impeach am, but appeals from elder, leaders and stakeholders from dia constituency na im make dem decide to step back in di interest of peace and stability.
“As we carefully consider dis appeals, we hereby express our willingness to consider a political solution rather than di outright removal of di Govnor and Deputy Govnor. We respectfully call on our oda colleagues for di Rivers State House of Assembly to also consider dis path.
"Dis position no come out of weakness. Rather, na sake of our conviction as leaders with forgiving hearts and, importantly, as mothers, wey believe say peace, stability, and di collective interest of Rivers State must always supersede personal or political differences.” Na so dem tok
Di Deputy Minority Leader for di Rivers State House of Assembly also hope say Govnor Fubara and im deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, go retrace dia steps and honour di agreement dem reach wit President Bola Tinubu.
Dis development don make four of di 26 lawmakers wey don pull out of di process.
Earlier in di week, minority leader and member representing Omuma constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo and Peter Abbey wey dey represent Degema Constituency, bin don call on dia colleagues to withdraw di impeachment notice dem issue on Thursday, 8 January 2026 and take di part of dialogue to resolve evri issue.
But wetin dis dia action of pulling out of di impeachment process mean, e get any effect on di process?
Wetin go happun to di impeachment process?
For Karibi George wey be lawyer and communications analyst, di one wey some lawmakers dey pullout of di impeachment process na sign say di lawmakers fit no get di two-third majority wey dey required by di constitution to impeach di govnor.
E say if according to wetin di ones wey don tok say na some of dia constituents ask dem no go fit move forward wit di process and if more constituents ask dia representatives to also pull out of di impeachment, den e mean say di impeachment process fit no work.
"Di lawmakers dey answerable to dia constituents and na wetin dia constituents ask dem to do na im dem go do.
So if like dem tok say na di pipo dem dey represent ask dem not to be part of di impeachment and dem no fit achieve two-thirds majority of di Assembly to vote in favour of di impeachment, e no gh go through."
George add say e go good if di Assembly members look for ways dem fit resolve dia fight wit di Govnor in a simple way.
E also wonder weda di Assembly don really serve di Govnor di impeachment notice as e observe say di constitution require say di Assembly suppose serve di govnor di impeachment notice personally and not by substituted means wia dem go go publish di notice for newspaper.
Dis e say if dem neva do so, e fit also mean say technically, di govnor neva receive any impeachment notice wey e go respond to.
"For me I go say make dem take di path of settling wateva fit be di issue. Already some stakeholders dey try to intervene like di Pan Niger Delta Forum Pandef as well as di Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers Council wey din set up mediation committees for dis issue. I go say make dem make use of dis bodies wey we believe to dey neutral, and resolve evritin so di State go dey at peace."
