મિત્રો, આજે ચર્ચા કરીશું કે અનિશ્ચિતતા વિશે અંગ્રેજીમાં કઈ રીતે જણાવશો. Phil, do you ever have to do that?

Great! હવે તમે ત્રણ લોકોને સાંભળો. તેઓ કઈ બાબતે અનિશ્ચિત છે?

I think there's a bookshop near the station, but I'm not sure.
A bookshop? There could be one in the town centre, but I don't really know.
I suppose there's a bookshop near here, but maybe I'm wrong.

હા, બધા ‘bookshop’ એટલે કે પુસ્તકનાં દુકાન વિશે વાત કરી રહ્યા છે. પણ ત્રણેયને ચોક્કસ રીતે ખબર નથી કે દુકાન કયા આવી છે. મિત્રો, હવે ફરીથી પ્રથમ વ્યક્તિને સાંભળો. પોતે અનિશ્ચિત છે તે જણાવવા માટે મહિલા કયા શબ્દોનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે?

I think there's a bookshop near the station, but I'm not sure.

Did you get that? She said 'I think' at the beginning. She also ended by saying 'but I'm not sure'. Here are some more examples:

I think Rick's having lunch, but I'm not sure.

I think I left my keys at home, but I'm not sure.

We pronounce 'think' with a /θ/ sound – remember that your tongue touches your front teeth when you say it. Repeat after me to practise:

I think there's a book shop

I think there's a book shop, but I'm not sure.

હવે બીજા વક્તાને સાંભળો. પોતે અનિશ્ચિત છે તે વિશે તે કઈ રીતે જણાવે છે?

A bookshop? There could be one in the town centre, but I don't really know.

Again, there are two things here. Instead of saying 'there is' we have a modal verb – 'there could be' – 'could' means something is possible. We also have the ending 'I don't really know'. Here's another example:

There could be some chicken in the fridge, but I don't really know.

હવે ત્રીજી વ્યક્તિને સાંભળો.

I suppose there's a bookshop near here, but maybe I'm wrong.

Again, two things to look for! 'Suppose' means the same as 'think', so 'I suppose' is the same as 'I think'. Also, look at the ending 'but maybe I'm wrong'. Listen to this example:

I suppose I'll be finished by 1 o'clock, but maybe I'm wrong.

Note, we could use any of the endings 'I'm not sure', 'I don't really know' and 'maybe I'm wrong' in any of these sentences.

સરસ. હવે સમય થયો છે અભ્યાસ કરવાનો. તમને લાગે છે કે નજીકમાં કોઈ 'chemist' એટલે કે દવાની દુકાન છે, પણ તમે જગ્યા બાબતે ચોક્કસ નથી. તો અંગ્રેજીમાં તમને કહેવું હોય તો કઈ રીતે કહેશો? યાદ રહે જવાબ આપતી વખતે અંગ્રેજી શબ્દો 'think' અને 'sure' નો ઉપયોગ કરો. ફિલ તમને જવાબ જણાવે એ પહેલાં તમારી પાસે વિચારવાનો સમય હશે.

સરસ. હવે કહો કે ‘bus station’ એટલે બસ સ્ટેશન ઉપર 'café'  હોઈ શકે છે. મિત્રો, જવાબ આપતી વખતે ક્રિયાપદ 'could' અને 'know' નો ઉપયોગ કરો. મિત્રો, 'café' નો ગુજરાતીમાં અર્થ થાય છે ઉપહારગૃહ.

હવે છેલ્લો પ્રશ્ન. જણાવો કે બગીચાની પાસે દુકાન હોઈ શકે છે. જવાબ આપતી વખતે અંગ્રેજી શબ્દો 'suppose' અને 'maybe' નો ઉપયોગ કરો. ફિલ તમને જવાબ જણાવે એ પહેલાં તમારી પાસે સમય હશે.
