મિત્રો, આજે ચર્ચા કરીશું કે અંગ્રેજીમાં તમે માફી કઈ રીતે માંગશો. ચર્ચાને આગળ વધારીએ એ પહેલાં તમે ત્રણ લોકોને સાંભળો, જે કોઈ બાબતે માફી માંગી રહ્યાં છે. સાંભળો અને નક્કી કરો કે ત્રણેયમાંથી સૌથી ઔપચારિક રીત કઈ છે. તમારી મદદ માટે શબ્દો છે ‘miss the bus’ એટલે બસ ચૂકી ગયો, ‘delay’ એટલે વિલંબ અને ‘delivery’ એટલે કોઈ વસ્તુની વહેંચણી. મિત્રો, અંગ્રેજીમાં પ્રસૂતિ માટે પણ ‘delivery’ શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે.

તો મિત્રો, ત્રણેયમાંથી કોણે સૌથી ઔપચારિક રીત કહ્યું કે માફ કરજો? તમે એકદમ બરાબર બોલ્યાં! એ  છે ત્રીજી વ્યક્તિ! આપણે જાણીશું કે કેમ ત્રીજી વ્યક્તિ સૌથી વધુ ઔપચારિક છે. હવે આપણે માફી માંગવાની રીતો વિશે ચર્ચા કરીએ. So, Sam, how can we say that we're sorry in English?

OK, let's listen to the first person again. This person uses a very common way to say sorry.

I'm so sorry I'm late. I missed the bus.

So the most common way to say 'sorry' is just to say 'I'm sorry' – and to make it stronger you can add an adverb like 'so', 'very' or 'really'. But it's important that you use your intonation to show that you mean it. Let's practise that quickly. Repeat after me:

I'm so sorry.

I'm really sorry.

And you can also say what you are sorry for. For example, 'I'm sorry I'm late' or 'I'm sorry I shouted at you.'

એ અપેક્ષિત અને જરૂરી છે કે તમે સામેની વ્યક્તિને સમજાવો કે આવું કયા કારણોસર થયું. જેમ કે અહીં મહિલા જણાવે છે કે 'I missed the bus' એટલે કે બસ ચૂકી ગઈ જેના કારણે મોડી પડી ગઈ.

મિત્રો, 'the traffic was really bad' નો અર્થ થાય છે કે રોડ ઉપર વાહનોની લાંબી કતાર હતી. હવે બીજા વ્યક્તિને સાંભળો. તેનાથી પુસ્તક ખોવાઈ ગયું છે અને માફી માંગી રહ્યો છે. શું તમને યાદ છે કે 'sorry' પહેલાં તે કયા શબ્દયોગી અવ્યયનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે? જાણ્વા માટે સાંભળો.

So he uses the preposition 'for' followed by the verb in the '-ing' form. So we use 'for' when we want to give a reason for being sorry. For example you could say 'I'm sorry for being late'. You could also use a noun after 'for' – like 'I'm sorry for the mess'.  Here, you can also use the preposition 'about' – 'I'm sorry about the mess'. Let’s practise that. Repeat after me:

I'm sorry for losing your book.

I'm sorry for the mess.

I'm sorry about the mess.

So she used the verb 'I apologise' which is a more formal way to say 'I'm sorry'. We often use 'apologise' with people we don't know or, in written English. It's normally followed by the preposition 'for' and the reason why you’re sorry. Let's practise the pronunciation. Repeat after me:
