सॅम तिचा सहकारी बेनला फोन करतीये. एका महत्त्वाच्या मिटिंगसाठी तो वेळेवर पोहोचलेला नाहीये, त्यामुळे सॅमला त्याची काळजी वाटते आहे. तो कुठे अडकलाय हे जाणून घेण्यासाठी सॅमने त्याला फोन केला.

Where are you, Ben?

Ben
I’m at the bus stop!

Tejali
अरे देवा बेन अजून ‘bus stop’ वरच आहे

Sam
Oh dear. While we wait, let’s talk about what ‘at’ means here. Ben said ‘I’m at the bus stop’.

Tejali
Yes! ‘At’ म्हणजे काय? ‘At’ म्हणजे येथे, एखाद्या ठिकाणी. तुम्ही एखाद्या ठिकाणी पोहचला असाल त्यावेळी ‘at’ म्हणतात. बेन ‘at the bus stop’ आहे. आता दुसरं उदाहरण समजा कोणीतरी तुमच्या दारावर कुणीतरी टकटक केलं तर काय म्हणणार?

Sam
Ben, where are you?

Ben
I’m on the bus.

Tejali
ठीक आहे, तो ‘on the bus’ आहे. वाहनासाठी ‘on’ वापरतात. पण यासाठी दोन अपवाद आहेत. हो ना सॅम?

Sam
Yes, we use ‘on’ for bicycles, buses, trains, planes, ships… But, careful, because we use ‘in’ for cars and taxis.

Tejaliहा ‘on’ आणखी कुठे वापरू शकतो? On म्हणजे च्या वर. एखाद्या पृष्ठभागावर गोष्ट असते किंवा आपण पृष्ठभागवर उभं असतो, तेव्हा ‘on’ वापरतात. उदाहरणार्थ, सॅम तुझा कॉफीचा मग ....   

Sam
It’s on the table.

And my feet are on the floor.

And we are on the 6th floor…and  Ben is not… Let me call him again.

Sam
Ben, you’re so late. Where are you?

Ben
I’m in the office. But where is everyone? Where are you?

Sam
Oh, Ben! Which building did you go to?

Tejali
Oh no! बेन चुकीच्या बिल्डिंगमध्ये गेला वाटतं! तो म्हणालेला की तो ‘in the office’ आहे. आपण चार भिंतींच्या आत असू किंवा एखाद्या गोष्टीच्या आत ठिकाणाच्या आत असू तेव्हा ‘in’ वापरतात.

Sam
Exactly! We are ‘in the studio’, ‘in a building’, Ben is ‘in the wrong office’, and my coffee is ‘in my cup’. ‘At’, ‘on’ and ‘in’ can be confusing words because we use them to talk about time, as well…

आज आपण कुठे किंवा कोण याबद्दल कसं बोलायचं याकडे लक्ष देणार आहोत. यासाठी आपण त्या क्रियापदानंतर ‘be’ हे क्रियापद वापरतो.

Sam
Now, the pronunciation isn’t difficult, but it’s still useful to practise. We usually put more importance on the words after ‘at’, ‘on’ and ‘in’. Like this – repeat after me:

I’m at the bus stop.

I’m on the bus.  

I’m in the office.

Thanks, Sam. आता तुम्ही काय शिकलात त्याची उजळणी करूया.

समजा तुम्ही लिफ्टमध्ये आहात. कसं सांगाल? ‘I’m…’ ने वाक्याची सुरुवात करा. ‘the lift’च्या आधी तुम्ही काय वापराल? विचार करा आणि सॅमचं उत्तरही ऐका.

I’m in the lift.

Tejali
Did you say the same as Sam?  आता तुम्ही तुम्ही ट्रेनमध्ये आहात, कसं सांगाल? ‘The train’च्या आधी काय वापराल? विचार करा, नंतर सॅम तुम्हाला उत्तर सांगेल. दोन अपवाद लक्षात आहेत ना?

I’m on the train.

Tejali
अरे वा! तुमचं उत्तर पण सारखंच होतं का? छानच! आता बघा, तुम्हाला ऑफिसच्या बिल्डिंगच्या रिसेप्शनमधून फोन आला आहे. तुमचा मित्र तुम्हाला भेटायला आलाय. तुम्ही जेवायला जाणार आहात. रिसेप्शनिस्ट हा निरोप तुम्हाला कसा सांगेल? ‘Your friend’ पासून वाक्याची सुरुवात करा. ‘Reception’ म्हणजे स्वागत कक्ष.

तुमच्या एक लक्षात आलं का, साधारणपणे ‘reception’च्या मागे ‘the’ वापरत नाही. आता तर तुम्हाला ठिकाणांसाठी ‘at’, ‘on’ आणि ‘in’ कसं वापरायचं हे समजलंय आहे.
