या भागात आपण 'there are' आणि 'there is' याचा वापर कसा करायचा ते शिकणार आहोत. चला, तर मग आज आपला मित्र लुईस बरोबर सुरुवात करू. त्याच्या फ्रीजमध्ये काय काय आहे ते तो आपल्याला सांगतोय. त्यातले कुठले पदार्थ वापरून दुपारसाठी त्याला स्वयंपाक करता येईल हे तुम्हाला ठरवायचं आहे. काही शब्दांकडे नीट लक्ष द्या: 'a pepper' म्हणजे ढोबळी मिरची, 'an onion' कांदा, 'cheese', 'milk' म्हणजे दूध, 'eggs' म्हणजे अंडी, 'tomatoes' म्हणजे टोमॅटो.

There's a pepper and there's an onion. There's some cheese but there isn't any milk. There are some eggs and some tomatoes, but there aren't any carrots.

Yes! तो 'ऑमलेट' बनवू शकतो.! त्याने फ्रीजमध्ये काय आहे किंवा काय नाही हे सांगण्यासाठी त्याने कुठले शब्द वापरले? पहिलं वाक्य पुन्हा एकदा ऐका– 'a pepper' आणि 'an onion' च्या आधी काय म्हणाला बरं?

ऐकलंत का तुम्ही? तो म्हणाला 'there's'. There आणि is हे दोन्ही शब्द मिळून झालं there’s. आता हे दोन शब्द वेगवेगळे असले तरी जेव्हा आपण सहज बोलतो तेव्हा तो एकच शब्द वाटतो. वस्तूचं एकवचन असेल तेव्हा त्यासोबत ‘is’ वापरायचं असतं.

Great! तो आणखी काय म्हणाला– त्याच्या 'there's' मध्ये काही बदल झाला का?

There's some cheese but there isn't any milk.

यावेळेसही त्याने 'there's' वापरलं, परंतु त्यात त्याने चीज शब्दापूर्वी 'some' म्हणजे काही हा शब्द वापरला. 'Cheese’ आकड्यात मोजता येत नाही, त्यामुळे ते असंख्यावाचक नाम आहे. त्यासाठी आपण 'some' वापरलंय.

So we can't say 'a', like with 'a pepper' or 'an onion', and when you pronounce 'some' you usually say it very quickly. Let's practise together – repeat after me.

यानंतर लुईस ने आपल्याला त्याच्या फ्रीजमध्ये दूध नाही असे सांगितले, यासाठी त्याने 'milk' या असंख्यावाचक नामाच्या मागे 'any' आणि 'isn't' हे दोन शब्द वापरले.

आता शेवटचं वाक्य ऐकू, लुईस ने त्याच्या शेवटच्या वाक्यात एकवचन वापरले की अनेकवचन?

तुमच्या एक गोष्ट लक्षात आली का? 'Eggs', 'tomatoes' आणि 'carrots' ही अनेकवचनी रूपं आहेत. इथे व्याकरण बदललेलं समजलं का तुम्हाला?

Yes, we change 'is' to 'are', but we still use ‘some' and 'any'. Let's practise:

There are some eggs.

There are some tomatoes.

There aren't any carrots.

तुमच्याकडे फ्रीजमध्ये एक अंड आहे – हे तुम्ही कसं सांगाल? त्यासाठी तुम्हाला 'an egg' हे वापरायचं आहे.  नंतर सॅमचं उत्तरही ऐका.

आता तुमच्या फ्रीजमध्ये कांदे बिलकुल नाहीत. कांदे मोजता येतात हे लक्षात ठेवा. म्हणून त्यासाठी तुम्ही 'there isn't any' किंवा 'there aren't any' असं म्हणाल का? विचार करा आणि नंतर सॅमचं उत्तर ऐका.
