| | | Tell me more! | This is a 360 view of barges preparing to go into Tunnel End at Marsden towards the other side of the Pennines! Standedge Tunnel is the longest, highest and deepest canal in Britain. The tunnel takes the canal under the high Pennine spine of Northern England between Marsden in the Colne Valley and Diggle in Saddleworth.
Before the canal tunnel near Huddersfield was complete all boats transferred their cargo to packhorses. The first boat passed through on December 10th 1810, after restoration the tunnel re-opened in 2001. | Getting there... |
