| | Tell me more! | Bingley's Five Rise Locks were built so that barges on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (opened in 1774) could rise or fall around 60 feet - essential so that they could continue their progress in this hilly landscape in either direction.
A feat of engineering then, and still spectacular today - we've managed to capture two barges making their watery way up part of the locks at the same time!
