The Yorkshire Mining Museum opened in 1988 and was granted 'national' status in 1995. The Caphouse site has possibly the oldest coal-mine shaft still in use in Britain today. Before 1827 the colliery was owned by the Milnes family and in 1917 the ownership was passed to the Lister Kaye family.
It was then run as a company until Nationalisation in 1947. The coal at Caphouse was exhausted by 1985 and its conversion into a museum began. | Getting there... | Caphouse Colliery, New Road, Overton, Wakefield WF4 4RH. Telephone 01924 848806
