Description
Artist Julie Bennett demonstrates how to prepare surfaces for painting. She shows how to prime raw canvas with layers of acrylic gesso, how to prime paper on a board by sponging with water and how to paint MDF with primer and wood (including found wood) using canvas sealer.

Hold a quick quiz round the class. Name a surface that students could work on and have them answer with the issues the surface presents and how they would prepare it. This is a useful clip to get students thinking about how they can use surfaces creatively to create texture or particular feelings in their work.
