Image treatment
Description
Graphic designer Yukiko Kubo demonstrates how photographic images can be treated to enhance their look, and how to achieve different effects appropriate to different purposes. Using a photograph of an eagle, she shows how this can be given heightened dramatic effect by darkening tones, changing background colour, separating the image into two colours and using a half-tone effect offset on to a contrasting colour. Finally she presents the finished image and explains why she has chosen the treatment for a particular book’s cover design.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be challenged to select an image then treat it in three different ways for three different purposes, for example, a film poster, a children’s book cover, and a billboard advert. They can then experiment with manipulating their chosen image in different ways, either using a computer graphics program or physically. They can then write an accompanying explanation of their thought processes and final choices.
