'The Island' by Stephen Walter
Description
Stephen Walter explains the inspiration behind his drawing ‘The Island’. He explains that his hand drawn map of London is a comment on the capital’s contradiction, chaos and intricacies. He decided to represent the city as an island as a wry joke on London’s self-importance and the way Britain identifies itself as an island nation.
Classroom Ideas
This clip could be used to develop an analytical and critical understanding of artists and their approaches. Could also provide an opportunity for pupils to create a representation of where they live. They could consider combining text, images, maps and other material to build up meaning and texture.
