Did you know?

Leisure activities in Germany are very structured and organised, and many activities will be done in a club – ein Verein. There will be clubs even in the smallest of places eg, ein Wanderverein (a walking club) or ein Musikverein (a music club). This is particularly important for young people who want to play sport, as schools do not usually have teams. They may join ein Handballverein (a handball club) or ein Sportverein (a sports club).

Many people of all ages in Germany belong to a choir – ein Chor. It provides a good social life as well as the pleasure of singing. All choirs, professional and amateur, have to be registered. Germany has 21,499 registered choirs. Switzerland and Austria are smaller countries, so have fewer choirs, including yodelling choirs.
