Heavy snowfall brings chaos to northern Japan

Record-breaking snowfall is continuing to cause significant disruption to parts of Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued warnings for heavy snowfall not only along the Sea of Japan coast but also on the Pacific side, where such conditions are uncommon, due to what the agency called "the strongest cold air in several years."

In Hokkaido, eastern areas including Obihiro and Kushiro, have reported severe snowfall, with accumulations reaching up to 1.29m (4.2ft). This has led to widespread disruptions, including road closures, suspension of train services, and numerous flight cancellations.

Residents have been advised to carry emergency provisions if they must travel, and approximately 370 schools across Hokkaido have cancelled classes.

The JMA warned of blizzards, high waves and hazardous road conditions through the weekend, urging residents — particularly in areas from Hokkaido to western Japan — to avoid nonessential travel.
