Venus in control
Venus Williams returns the ball
Venus Williams put in a strong display
Saturday's results

Top seed Venus Williams made it look easy with a comprehensive straight sets win over Lisa Raymond in their semi-final at the Bank of the West Classic.

Venus triumphed 6-3 6-0 and will meet defending champion Kim Clijsters in the final.

Clijsters ended the run of Lindsay Davenport winning 4-6 6-4 6-2.

Williams was dominant throughout her match and the four-time grand slam champion sent down nine aces and won 88 percent of her first serve points.

"I felt very comfortable with my serve," Williams said, "It's a strong part of my game and today it was really effective."

Being number one is more important to me than it used to be

It was her second victory over Raymond in three weeks after they met in the fourth round at Wimbledon where Venus won 6-1 6-2.

Raymond found it difficult to get to grips with her opponent's play and she could not manage a single break point during the match.

Williams will be playing in her fourth final here and will be looking for her second title to go with a victory in 2000.

"This is the only tournament where I can gain points this summer so I really want to win it," said Williams, who lost her top ranking and the final to her younger sister, Serena, at Wimbledon.

Kim Clijsters keeps her cool
Clijsters recovered after losing the first set to Davenport

"Being number one is more important to me than it used to be. It's not nice to be number two. I wanted to stay on top of the mountain."

Second-seeded Davenport, playing in her first tour event since November because of a serious knee injury, came out with confidence against Kim Clijsters.

The American took advantage - breaking Clijsters in the first set after two double faults.

Up 4-2 in the second set, Davenport suddenly lost her edge. Clijsters held serve to go up 5-4, then broke Davenport to win the set.

Clijsters went on to win seven straight games during the match as Davenport's frustration grew.
