Williams outguns Clijsters
Venus Williams in action at the Bank of the West Classic
Williams wins her first event since April in California
Venus Williams bt Kim Clijsters 6-3 6-3

Top seed Venus Williams has won the Bank of the West Classic in California.

The world number two showed impressive form to beat Kim Clijsters 6-3 6-3 in the hardcourt event.

Williams served with power and variety and controlled most of the baseline exchanges.

Clijsters struggled at times on her own serve allowing her opponent to capitalise.

Williams broke Clijsters to move 4-2 ahead in the first set when the Belgian missed a routine forehand.

The American closed out the set in impressive style, stretching for a backhand volley winner at deuce and followed that with a 112mph ace.

She wasted little time imposing herself on the second set, breaking Clijsters in the opening game with a back-court winner and then again in the third game to lead 3-0.

Although Williams was broken at 5-2 but broke back immediately to win the contest when the fourth seed sent a backhand long.

It was Williams' first tournament win since she triumphed at Amelia Island in early April.

However despite the victory, she remains at number two in the world rankings behind her younger sister, Serena.

"Kim brought out the best in me today," Venus admitted.

"I'd like to think that for someone to beat me, they would have to play an almost perfect match," she said.
