| Sunday, 28 July, 2002, 11:18 GMT 12:18 UK Corretja clinches victory ![]() Corretja's form had been oustanding all week Alex Corretja beat second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4 6-1 6-3 to claim his second Austrian Open title. The eighth seed, who also won the tournament in 2000, had never previously beaten his fellow Spaniard. In hot conditions in Kutzbuhel, neither player could establish superiority in the first set as serve was broken seven times. But Corretja found his rhythm in the second set as Ferrero began to make errors and he wrapped up the win in just under two hours. The world number 17 has now notched up 17 career titles - he won his first title of the year just two weeks ago at Gstaad in the Swiss Alps. The 28-year-old said he had been playing some of his best tennis to date in Austria. On his way to the final he beat top seed and French Open champion Albert Costa. Kitzbuhel, the last major clay court tournament of the year, has now been won by a Spaniard six times in the last eight years. |
