| Friday, 26 July, 2002, 14:29 GMT 15:29 UK Costa falls to friendly fire ![]() Corretja was never in trouble against Costa Friday's results Top seed Albert Costa was bundled out of the Generali Open in Austria on Friday by Alex Corretja, who was the best man at Costa's wedding last month. Eighth seed Corretja, who won the title in 2000, clinched a semi-final berth with a 6-1 6-2 victory. "I was pretty solid, made few mistakes whereas Costa made more - this time I was lucky," Corretja, who lost to Costa in the semi-finals of the French Open. "Of course it's nice to beat the French Open champion. "Albert was a little disturbed today. The match was decided mentally - he wasn't so concentrated and made so many mistakes on his forehand." Costa, the champion here in 1995, 1998 and 1999 as well as a finalist last year, became increasingly frustrated as his forehands flew far and wide or into the net. "Sometimes you have a good day, but I didn't today," Costa said. "I was focused 100 percent, was trying all the time, but that's just the way it is." Corretja now plays sixth seed Gaston Gaudio, who beat Nicolas Massu 6-4 6-3 in Friday's first quarter-final. Mariano Zabaleta continued his fine run at the tournament with a hard-fought three-set win over French Open quarter-finalist Andrei Pavel. The Argentine 12th seed, who defeated Nicolas Lapentti in the previous round, will play Juan Carlos Ferrero, who fought off Juan Ignacio Chela in three tight sets. |
